4th Grade Conservation/Safety Day
White County 4th Grade Students Experience Conservation/Safety Day
Fourth graders from across White County were given an opportunity to participate in a conservation/safety day at the Hamilton County Fish and Wildlife Area, also known as Dolan Lake, on Friday, May 10. Students learned about poison and water safety, underground utilities, wildlife, and counted rings to determine the age of a tree while decorating tree discs. Students also experienced special sessions with demonstrations from Wayne–White Counties Electric Cooperative’s live line safety demonstration, a Carmi Police Canine Unit takedown, and the IDNR Conservation Police Air Ranger boat.
Sessions were taught with the help of employees from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, White County Extension, JULIE, and White/Gallatin County SWCD/NRCS. Around 180 students from White County schools participated in the educational, fun-filled conservation day. The event was sponsored by the White County Soil and Water Conservation District and Farm Bureau. Special thanks go out to all 4th grade teachers, presenters from partner agencies, and to Dolan Lake’s Site Superintendent and staff for all their assistance to make the day a successful event!
